The Yeti Crab (Kiwa hirsuta), also dubbed the yeti lobster by its discoverers and often referred to as the "furry lobster" outside the scientific literature (it is actually a squat lobster, more closely related to crabs and hermit crabs than true lobsters, with the term "furry lobster" being more commonly used for the family Synaxidae), is a crustacean discovered in 2005 in the South Pacific Ocean. This decapod, which is approximately 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) long, is notable for the quantity of silky blond setae (resembling fur) covering its pereiopods (thoracic legs, including claws). It uses them to capture chemobacteria from hydrothermal vents to eat. It has reduced pigment, meaning it is almost completely white in color, and is thought to be blind.
