The Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus), also known as the common warthog, African warthog, or savanna warthog, is a wild member of the pig family (Suidae) found in grassland, savanna, and woodland in sub-Saharan Africa. In the past, it was commonly treated as a subspecies of the desert warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) of northern Kenya, Somalia, and eastern Ethiopia, but today that scientific name is restricted to that species.

They are preyed by predators such as humans, lions, leopards, cheetahs, crocodiles, wild dogs, and hyenas. Birds of prey such as Verreaux's eagle owls and martial eagles sometimes prey on piglets. They would rather flee than fight and are surprisingly fast. They can run up to 35 mph. They can fight as well and will defend themselves with their formidable tusks when cornered or challenged.
