Synopsis[]

While visiting India, Martin and Chris go off on a creature adventure to explore the world of the dhole - aka "the red dog". With the help of Wild Kratt kid Mala, they manage to find this elusive and endangered creature and work together with the pack, and the Kratt bros are able to fend off one ravenous tiger!

Plot[]

In the Tortuga HQ, Aviva is inventing the Duplicator to surprise the Kratt brothers, without telling them. Aviva tests it out with her science trophy, successfully splitting it into two. Meanwhile, Martin is reading The Jungle Book and shows Chris about the red dog, dhole, who takes down a tiger according in the story. Going by the description in the book, the younger Kratt brother looks up the real-life dhole on the Tortuga database. And yet, it still baffles the brothers that a canine can face a Bengal tiger when it's about 75% smaller than the big cat. So today's creature mission to find some dholes and see they can face a tiger.

Trivia[]

  • The book that Martin reads is Rudyard Kipling's 1894 novel The Jungle Book.
    • Ironically some of the animals from The Jungle Book are in the episode: Dhole (The Red Dogs), Indian Leopard (Bagheera), Bengal Tiger (Shere Khan), Sloth Bear (Baloo), Langur Monkeys (Bandar-log).

Key Facts and Creature Moments[]

  • The dhole is a canid, but while it may look like a red dog, it's not a canine species. It's in its own genus, Cuon. This canid species evolved in the Pleistocene Era, in the time of sabre-toothed cats, short-faced bears, woolly rhinos and mammoths, and has survived pretty much unchanged since then.
  • The closest modern day relative of the dhole in the dog family is the African wild dog.
  • Dholes are also known as the Asian wild dog or red dog.
  • Dholes are smaller than wolves and are around the size of a large fox, but can survive in areas full of large prey and rival predators by living in a large pack.
  • Dholes are endangered in the wild.
  • Dhole pack fighting off an Indian leopard.
  • Dhole pack warding off a Bengal tiger.
