The Swordfish (Xiphias gladius), also known as broadbills in some countries, are large, highly migratory, predatory billfish characterized by a long, flat bill. The Swordfish gets it's name from it's elongated sword-like bill, known as the Rostrum, which is found at the end of it's face. They use their impressive rostrum to stun and confuse their prey and help reduce drag forces, making swimming less costly! Swordfish have the ability to warm their eyes because of a special heat exchange organ near the eye. Warm eyes can work about 10x faster than cold eyes at certain depths! These fish are found widely in tropical and temperate parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, and can typically be found from near the surface to a depth of 550 m (1,800 ft).
