The Shortfin Mako Shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) is a species of shark that lives in offshore temperate and tropical seas worldwide. Its name comes from the Maori, who call the shark and its teeth Mako in their language. It is the fastest swimming species of shark, as it is able to swim at up to 45 mph (70 km/h). Its speed enables it to jump to a height of approximately 30 feet (9 meters). They typically feed on cephalopods and bony fish, and are one of the few predators of adult billfish.
