The Plumed Basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons), also known as the green basilisk, double-crested basilisk, Jesus Christ lizard, or simply basilisk lizard or basilisk, is a species of lizard native to Central America. Basilisks are omnivorous and eat plants, insects and occasionally small mammals and lizards. Males have three crests: one on the head, one on the back, and one on the tail. Females are smaller and don't have the prominent crests of the male.
Basilisks are known for their ability to run across water for short periods of time. They can reach reach speeds up to to 5.2 mph, a little slower than how fast they are on land. They have fringes on their large hind feet, which creates tiny pockets of air that keep them suspended on top of the water as long as they maintain a fast pace. Juveniles can run for 10 to 20 meters before sinking.
