The Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis), also known as the Carolina anole, American green anole, American anole, red-throated anole, and the American chameleon (typically in the pet trade due to its color-changing ability, even though it is not a true chameleon), is a a tree-dwelling species of anole lizard native to the southeastern United States and introduced to islands in the Pacific and Caribbean. A small to medium-sized lizard, the green anole can change its color to several shades from brown to green.

It is an insectivore, typically feeding on small insects. They are known to be extremely territorial animals, with some even being observed fighting their reflections in a pane of glass. Like all male anoles, the male green anole possesses a flap of skin called a dewlap on its neck, which it extends during dominance and mating displays.
