The Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a species of rodent from the ponds and lakes of North America. Its name comes from the musky odor that it uses to mark its territory. Like beavers, it builds homes out of sticks and branches called lodges or push-ups, which can only be entered from underwater. These dens provide open spaces in marshes, securing habitats for a variety of aquatic birds. However, muskrats have been seen entering beaver lodges to feast on the larder, a behavior that the beavers don't seem to mind, considering that the muskrats also bring more food back to the lodge.
