The Eyeless Shrimp (Rimicaris hybisae) is a species of shrimp in the family Alvinocarididae. Even though it is known as the eyeless shrimp, it does not mean that it lacks all vision. Eyeless shrimp actually contain a light-sensing organ, which is located on their backs. This organ contains a certain pigment with an absorption rate that's very similar to rhodopsin, allowing the shrimp to detect low levels of illumination. It is believed that they use this low level of light to navigate around the hydrothermal vents located in the Piccard and Von Damm hydrothermal vent fields from the Mid-Cayman Rise of the Atlantic Ocean. In order to protect themselves from predators like anglerfish and dragonfish these shrimp emit a sticky blue bioluminescent glue to confuse the predator.
