Frogs are short-bodied, tailless amphibians of the order Anura. Some rough-skinned species, especially those of the family Bufonidae, are commonly called toads—though this is an informal distinction based purely on appearance. Most frogs have long hind legs which they use for jumping. They produce a wide range of calls, particularly in their breeding season. Like most amphibians, frogs generally lay their eggs in water; these hatch into fully aquatic larvae called tadpoles. Though their tadpoles are usually herbivorous, most adult frogs are carnivores, catching insects and other prey with their sticky tongues. Frogs live on every continent except Antarctica and are the largest group of amphibians, with over 7,700 species.
