The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a species of bird from the coastlines from North to South America. It is known as the state bird of Louisiana, as well as being the largest of all state birds. It is famed for using the special pouch on its lower beak, called a gular pouch, to help scoop up fish to eat. Brown Pelicans will fly to a great height and then dive into the water, catching whatever fish they can in their pouch. They then return to dry land to eat their catch.
