The Atlantic Goliath Grouper (Epinephelus itajara), also known as the jewfish, is a species of grouper native to the Atlantic Ocean. They are massive fish that can grow up to 8 ft long and weigh up to 790 lbs. These fish can form spawning aggregations of over 100 individuals. They can survive in low-oxygenated and brackish water. They are predators of coral reefs, eating other fish, crustaceans, octopuses, young sea turtles, sharks, and barracudas. They've even been seen eating lemon sharks by just swallowing them whole! These fish have only a few natural enemies including large sharks like tiger sharks and great hammerhead sharks. They were once over hunted for their meat, but now are making a comeback.
