The Antelope Jackrabbit (Lepus alleni) is a North American hare native to Southern Arizona and Northwestern Mexico. It features a white belly, light grey sides, a black-peppered back, and orange hues on its neck and chest. This species thrives in diverse tropical and subtropical environments, favoring grassy hills, plains, or barren deserts with large shrubs over tall grass. A 2014 ecological study highlighted that optimal habitats include grassy ground cover with a mesquite overstory. Unlike the black-tailed jackrabbit, which tolerates drier conditions, the antelope jackrabbit prefers areas with summer rainfall between 90 mm and 360 mm, indicating a preference for higher humidity. The antelope jackrabbit consumes cacti, grasses, and leafy plants, and has been seen digging to eat soil for minerals and nutrients. Its natural predators include coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, ocelots, Harris's hawks, and golden eagles.
