The American goshawk (Accipiter atricapillus) is a species of raptor in the family Accipitridae native to North America. Up until 2023, it was treated as conspecific with the closely related Eurasian goshawk (A. gentilis), where they were both given the name northern goshawk. They are fierce predators and will take prey including squirrels, rabbits, and medium-sized birds. They are very fast and maneuverable fliers and can fly through densely forested areas at top speed after prey, without crashing. They have very thick feathers for hunting in northern forests across their range. Their strong talons can subdue a squirrel in little time.
